The best place to do this is either outside or standing near a window with the light facing you. The picture should show your neck and a little bit of the top of your chest. 

 

When choosing a foundation color, try to match your face to the rest of your body, like your neck and chest, so that your face is not a different color than the rest of you. Remember that you add color and definition to your face with bronzer and blush, not foundation.
